On Wednesday the 19th of March a group of Educafe students paid a visit to the Newbury Museum where they learned about the prehistory of the area and more recently, its prominence in the civil war and cloth trade. Students were given handouts with questions to complete as they journeyed through the museum. Ms. E was quite taken by the civil war soldier who seemed to be in need of medical help. Mr. D managed to get himself thrown into the stocks after trying on a suit of armour. Ms. R and Ms. S loved the old maid uniforms and everyone marvelled at the clay pipes from the 17th Century. Ms. Ra and Ms. I were impressed by the Bronze Age jewellery which wouldn’t have looked out of place on their arms today! After the tour, we all sat down and discussed what we liked and disliked and what surprised us.
I think Ms. N would have liked to have taken the coachman’s coat home with her and many were surprised by the mammoth tusk.
Our next day out will be a treasure trail through Newbury in June, so we’ll be asking students to bring umbrellas and suncream, just to be sure.
At Afghan Corner, we’ve been role playing visits to coffee shops and telephone calls to doctors as well as talking about our mothers and our families back home. We’ve had a lot of laughs and learned some really interesting things about each other. I’ve managed to get some good exercise in chasing Rona’s little girl during her frequent attempts at escaping the library. Next month, we will be looking at shopping, family and summer events.
