News from the Chatty Corner – March 25

The Chatty Corner continues to thrive.  We regularly see over 40 chatters and our lovely volunteers are always there for them.  It has been a joy to see so many new chatters visiting us.  They have usually heard about us from a friend or on social media.  It’s a big step for them to take to come the first time and we often see some very nervous faces.  However, they always leave with a big smile on their faces having been made to feel welcome by both volunteers and chatters.

February saw the launch of our Language Support Resettlement Programme for Afghan visitors.  There are over 20 chatters from Afghanistan; many of whom come almost every week.  They are now having some more formal language input with the aim of encouraging them settle in to the community and be more confident when going about their daily lives.  They will have help with going to the doctors, finding their way round Newbury, shopping, speaking to their children’s teachers and many other day to day activities.

We are also excited to be offering our Hong Kong Nationals a chance to improve their language around health and wellbeing.  This project is due to start in the library at the end of March and is aimed at elementary level chatters.
